History is tackled as early as Year 1 in a Charlotte Mason (CM) education.
But since my dear daughter (DD) is still in Kindergarten (which isn’t actually required in a CM education), instead of diving into Philippine History head on, I decided to leisurely take our time reading about our culture instead.
I tried to look for a sort of children’s literary travel book where the journey describes different places in the Philippines, but I didn’t find one.
The best that came up from my searches was All About the Philippines, a book where three cousins, each hailing from our three biggest islands, share some interesting facts about our country and stories of their local lives and culture.
I don’t think it is completely a living book but it was good enough. My DD didn’t like it at first (the first few parts dealt with a few historical facts which are, admittedly, quite difficult for a Kindergartener to comprehend), but she eventually liked it when the three kids starring in the book started to share their stories.
Curriculum/Book list
- Kalesa. A short picture book about our local old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage.
- All About the Philippines. Described above.
Supplements
- Good Night Philippines, Good Night World. A book showcasing samples of the different languages in the Philippines and the world. This book could double as a Geography book. For each languange and place identified, we looked it up on a map/globe.
- Alpabetong Filipino. Read as a free read during Morning Time.
- Alpabeto ng Kulturang Filipino. Read as a free read during Morning Time.
Again, we read free reads leisurely without any narration.
